Chisinau, 16 December /MOLDPRES/-President Nicolae Timofti today held consultations with MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Democratic Party (PDM) and Liberal Party (PL) to designate a candidate for the office of prime minister.
The sides focused on the formula used to appoint a candidate for the position of prime minister.
After two hours of talks, the president said “the political leaders are not ready right now to acknowledge that they succeeded to form a coalition and appoint a prime minister. They agreed to take one or two more days to make up their mind, and meet again the day after tomorrow,” Timofti noted.
Acting PLDM leader, Valeriu Strelet said “the president was very firm. We decided that he would come up with a working formula, if pro-European parties failed to reach a consensus. It is a very uncertain situation. We must meet tomorrow and talk,” Strelet noted.
After the meeting, PDM leader Marian Lupu said the talks focused on the formula used to designate a prime minister. “The party with the highest number of mandates should submit a candidature for the office of prime minister. Three sides agreed to go on with this formula. However, we could not reach an understanding. Therefore, we agreed to continue talks in the next one or two days,” Lupu said.
PL leader Mihai Ghimpu noted that “we did not really understand each other today. In the next days, I hope we find a solution and invest a new government, that would last for three years, instead of three months,” Ghimpu said.
President Timofti held a separate meeting with the unaffiliated MPs of the European People’s Party of Moldova (EPPM), headed by Iurie Leanca, this morning. Following the talks, Leanca said “they hammered out an eventual solution to overcome the political crisis”.
Over the past six years of pro-European government in Moldova, the party with the highest number of mandates in the parliament was entitled to nominate candidates to the position of prime minister. Currently, 19 mandates belong to PLDM. PDM has 19 mandates as well, while Leanca’s group holds only three mandates.
