USA to further back Moldova’s efforts to implement reforms

Chisinau, 17 December /MOLDPRES/-Moldovan Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today held a meeting with the representative of the U.S. State Secretary of Commerce, Daleep Singh, on a visit to Chisinau. The latter said the USA was further backing Moldova and encouraged it to swear in a new government as soon as possible, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
During the meeting, the sides focused on Moldova’s democratic transformations, implementation of reforms it has committed to as an EU associated state, especially in the financial-banking sector. The officials tackled the social and political evolution as well.
According to Candu, Moldova is currently facing major political and economic challenges. He believes a string of profound structural reforms must be implemented in order to regain the confidence of Moldova’s citizens and development partners in its EU future.
“The investiture of the government and continuation of reforms, including the qualitative and accelerated implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement are the main objectives. If the system stays the same, the situation in Moldova will never change, and instead, one person will be replaced by another,” Candu said.
The speaker touched upon the parliament’s willingness to examine and adopt a legislative package in the near future, in order to settle a string of problems in the financial-banking system and introduce new rules on corporate governance and transparency of share ownership.
The officials also broached the situation of Moldova’s energy sector, progress in the implementation of gas and electricity connectivity projects with Romania, measures to combat corruption, as well as expectations from the activity of the EU mission of legal experts to Moldova.
For his part, the U.S. official reiterated USA’s support for Moldova’s efforts to implement the agenda of reforms and also take urgent measures to ensure its stability. He noticed the positive dynamics of democratic changes in Moldova, and encouraged authorities to keep going on.
