Moldovan prosecutor general unveils report in parliament

Chisinau, 17 December /MOLDPRES/ - Prosecutor General Corneliu Gurin today unveiled a report on the institution he leads in parliament.
According to Gurin, as many as 41,786 offences were recorded in Moldova in 2014, by 3,629 more against the year before. Thus, the crime rate registered a 9.51-per cent increase in Moldova.
"Petit offences had the biggest share in rise of the crime rate, with their number increasing by 1,713 cases, followed by less serious crimes, which grew by 1,566 cases, the number of serious crimes rose by 243 cases and the quite serious ones - by 113. The number of exceptionally serious crimes is decreasing," Gurin said.
The prosecutor general also said the dynamic of the crime rate had been triggered by the same factors, among which the low living standards, lack of income sources, high unemployment rate, migration. Also, Gurin specified that, in 2014, the Prosecutor General's Office had opened 379 criminal files for corruption acts, of which 188 for passive сorruption, 18 for influence peddling, 203 for abuse of power and 226 for excess of power.
In the end of the report, the prosecutor general answered questions and criticism by MPs, stressing that he would not resign. Corneliu Gurin avoided giving details on widely known cases investigated by prosecutors.
