Chisinau, 21 December /MOLDPRES/ - A former premier of Moldova, Ion Sturza, is the candidate nominated by President Nicolae Timofti for the office of prime minister. The head of state made today statements to this effect, after consultations with the leaders of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM), Democratic Party (PDM), Liberal Party (PL) and the non-affiliated MPs of the Leanca group.
The Moldovan president said he had put forward the candidacy of Ion Sturza, as the latter knew very well the problems dealing with Moldova's economy and would manage to settle the problems faced by the society at present.
"I took into account that Mr. Sturza had held the office of prime minister. He knows well the problems concerning the country's economy, the financial and general situation. I hope that he will manage to solve the problems the society is presently confronting with. I hope that the pro-European parties will analyse the things and will take a right decision," Nicolae Timofti said.
The former prime minister said he was ready to take responsibility for an efficient governance.
"I want to thank Mr President for trust, I want to be with my people, in this difficult moment. One of the first conditions will be the signing of a code of integrity, which sees bringing new people to government. The economic problems, budgetary and fiscal problems must be settled and I hope that we will do good things along with the new leadership of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM). I will try to start consultations with the parties, with a view of bringing together a majority, due to vote a politically unaffiliated cabinet. I hope that we will begin consultations tomorrow," Ion Sturza said.
Ion Sturza was born in the Pirjolteni village, central Calarasi district, on 9 May 1960. He is a politician and businessman, former prime minister of Moldova in February - December 1999.
Under the Constitution, the candidate nominated for the prime minister post has at his/her disposal 15 days to ask for a vote of confidence in parliament on the action programme and the entire list of the cabinet.
