European People's Party of Moldova to decide on whether to back or not premier-designate' s candidacy

Chisinau, 23 December /MOLDPRES/ - The European People's Party of Moldova (PPEM) is to decide on whether to support on not the candidacy of the nominated prime minister, Ion Sturza, within the formation. PPEM leader Iurie Leanca announced this decision after a today's meeting with Sturza.

Following one hour of discussions, Iurie Leanca said the dialogue had been productive. Nevertheless, there are differences of opinions in terms of solutions to overcome the crisis in Moldova.

"We exchanged opinions on the situation in Moldova. Mr. Sturza presented the diagnosis of the problems in Moldova. We don't have divergent visions. Only one difference persists - as regards the formulas for getting out of the crisis. Unfortunately, I don't believe that a technocrat and politically unaffiliated government might come up with regulatory solutions," Leanca specified.

"We are to meet again and discuss the cabinet's composition, after which we will decide on whether to back or not the candidacy of Mr. Sturza within the party," Leanca said.

Prime minister-designate Ion Sturza said there were no major divergences between his opinions and the ones of Iurie Leanca on the critical situation in Moldova.

"There was a discussion between two old friends. My appeal to him was that we should everybody mobilise to improve the situation in the country. It remains to continue the dialogue, after I meet other formations as well," Sturza said.

On 22 December, the prime minister-designate had a meeting with MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM). After the meeting, PLDM acting leader Valeriu Strelet said his formation would back the candidacy of Ion Sturza to the office of prime minister.

Ion Sturza is the candidate nominated by President Nicolae Timofti for the post of prime minister. The head of state announced the news on 21 December, following consultations with the leaders of PLDM, Democratic Party (PDM) and Liberal Party (PL), as well as the unaffiliated lawmakers of the Leanca group.

Under the Constitution, the candidate nominated for the prime minister post has at his/her disposal 15 days to ask for a vote of confidence in parliament on the action programme and the entire list of the cabinet.

The government led by Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet, was dismissed with the votes of PDM, Party of Communists and Party of Socialists MPs on 29 October 2015.
