Moldovan acting premier summons leadership of Interior Ministry, Border Police, Customs Service to meeting

Chisinau, 30 December /MOLDPRES/ - Acting Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega today summoned Interior Minister Oleg Balan, head of the Interior Ministry's (MAI) Border Police Department, Dorin Purice and Director-General of the Customs Service Tudor Balitchi to a meeting, after he had paid an unexpected visit to the Otaci border checkpoint, north Moldova, the government's communication and media relations department has reported.
During the visit, the acting prime minister showed interest in the registration of the flow of passenger transport. Gheorghe Brega asked for lists of authorised passenger transport units, recent registrations of transport units, that were crossing the state border and the number of cases of state border violation by transport units in December. On visit, the acting prime minister met a driver who was carrying 14 passengers, and who claimed that all of them were his relatives.
The irregularities discovered during the visit were discussed at a working meeting, in which the leadership of MAI, Border Police Department and Customs Service participated. Gheorghe Brega demanded urgent measures, to cease the phenomenon of illegal transportation of passengers and asked for being informed on the results got in two weeks.
On 29 December, the acting prime minister visited the border checkpoint Leuseni (border with Romania), to see how the illicit transportation of passengers was combatted. Competent people said 68 mini-buses crossed the border at this point in one night alone, of which 53 transport units were without authorisation, for which fines were applied.
The subject of illicit transportation of passengers was also tackled at a cabinet meeting from 16 December. The acting prime minister asked the Transport and Roads Infrastructure Ministry to submit the list of companies having right to carry passengers and official information on the vehicles registered for passengers' transportation to all the state border checkpoints.
Gheorghe Brega said the employees of the state border checkpoints were to rigorously supervise the observance of the legal provisions in this respect, in order to prevent traffic accidents and ensure people's safe transportation.
