Moldovan state road administration says traffic heavy due to snowfall

15:41 | 07.01.2016 Category: Social

Chisinau, 7 January /MOLDPRES/-Today’s heavy snowfall made traffic difficult on some national roads. However, the State Road Administration says there are neither blocked roads nor traffic jams so far.

According to the State Road Administration, road traffic takes place under winter conditions. Rain and sleet fell in Moldova’s southern region in the morning today, while northern and central areas were covered by snowfall. The thickness of the snow layer in the north reaches ten centimeters.

Traffic was heavy on the road segment near Peresecina village, Orhei district, this morning. Though the road has been unblocked, cars continue to move slowly because of the snowfall and snow-layer on the road. The National Patrol Inspectorate deployed its teams on the Chisinau-Orhei road segment to ensure an efficient management of the traffic. More special equipment units are clearing snow off national roads.

The State Hydro-Meteorological Service issued yellow code of strong snowfall across Moldova’s entire territory. Strong snowfall and sleet are expected today.

The day-time air temperature will oscillate between -2 and -5 degrees Celsius in the north, -1 and -4 degrees Celsius in the centre and between 0 and -3 degrees Celsius in the south.

The night-time air temperature will vary between -3 and 0 degrees Celsius in the north, -2 and +1 degrees Celsius in the centre and between -1 and +2 degrees Celsius in the south.

As all national roads will be covered by snow and ice today and tomorrow, the General Police Department recommends that drivers do not start a road trip if their cars are not equipped with winter tires and snow chains. As roads are covered by glazed frost, ice or snow, drivers should drive slowly, regardless if they are inside or outside settlements.
