Chisinau, 12 January /MOLDPRES/-Moldovan Ambassador to Germany Oleg Serebrian presented the letters of accreditation to German President Joachim Gauck on 6 January, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication service has reported.

After the presentation of credentials, the officials discussed the need to boost up bilateral ties. Gauck voiced his regret over his impossibility to honour the invitation of Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti to visit Moldova so far. According to him, Germany has a predilection for Moldova and this is important for their bilateral ties. Hoping that Moldova would succeed to address its political situation, the German president promised to re-examine the invitation to visit Moldova later on. In the context, Gauck asked about the frequently propagated probability of early parliamentary elections in Moldova, voicing curiosity and concern about possible repercussions for its foreign policy.

The sides exchanged views on the situation of the Transnistrian conflict. The German president suggested Chisinau shows discernment and overcomes the political crisis for the benefit of the people residing on the left bank of the Dniester River. At the same time, officials broached the economic evolution in Moldova and its Transnistrian breakaway region.

Moreover, the German president showed interest in Moldovan-Romanian bilateral ties. He welcomed the pragmatic transformation of Moldovan-Romanian relations caused by the election of Klaus Johannis as Romanian president.

The Moldovan ambassador thanked Gauck for Germany’s constant political support, implementation of development assistance projects and essential financial assistance to modernize Moldova. The German president assured Serebrian of Germany’s willingness to help Moldova align with the EU. He voiced hope that Moldova would succeed to progress in the implementation of reforms and successfully use the tools the Eastern Partnership offers it.
