Chisinau, 14 January /MOLDPRES/ - The Democratic Party (PDM) is ready for snap parliamentary elections, if the head of state does not accept the candidacy of Vladimir Plahotniuc for the office of prime minister. PDM today made the announcement in a press release published on the formation's official webpage.
According to the Democrats' press service, "in the situation when President Nicolae Timofti will not fulfill his duties, under Moldova's Constitution, to nominate the candidate of the parliamentary majority for the office of prime minister, the Democratic Party of Moldova will find out that a major political deadlock has been reached, which runs the risk of turning into a deep political crisis."
The Democrats say the situation in Moldova is at a step from destabilisation., "and the prolongation of the political crisis runs the risk of leading to unwished violence. If such a scenario is carried out, then the fact that the starting of snap parliamentary elections in Moldova is a wish of groups of political and economic interests, a wish put into operation by the head of state, with his involvement, will be confirmed," the communique says.
The PDM members informed that they were ready to participate in snap parliamentary polls. "Nevertheless, taking into account the fact that a relevant segment of Moldova's residents want a change of the situation in the country via snap elections, which comes from nationwide opinion polls, the Democratic Party is ready to take part in a political exercise of this kind," the press release also says.
On 13 January, President Nicolae Timofti rejected the candidacy of Vladimir Plahotniuc for the office of prime minister.
According to a press release issued by the presidential press service, the head of state proposed that the parliamentary majority "identifies another candidate for the office of prime minister, who would meet the aforementioned criteria."
Under a ruling by the Constitutional Court, if a new government is not sworn in office till 29 January 2016, the Moldovan parliament will be dissolved and snap parliamentary will be called.
