Moldovan president appeals for calm in context of last days' protests

Chisinau, 22 January /MOLDPRES/ - The ex officio cabinet members, the bashkan (governor) of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia Irina Vlah and the head of the Academy of Sciences (ASM), Gheorghe Duca, today took oath in the presence of President Nicolae Timofti, the presidential press service has reported.
In the beginning of the ceremony, the head of state repeatedly appealed for calm, in the context of the last days' protests. Timofti said he observed the citizens' right to free expression, on condition that "the actions are according to the law, without violation of the public order."
President Nicolae Timofti urged the government to speed up the improvement of the economic situation and resume the dialogue with Moldova's development partners.
Also, Nicolae Timofti said that the taking oath by the cabinet of ministers late on 20 January had taken place at a request by Pavel Filip, so that the government be functional and take the needed decisions to stabilise the situation in Moldova.
President Nicolae Timofti wished success to the new cabinet, reiterating support for the promotion of the European reforms by the government.
