Decision-makers guilty of losing lawsuits at European Court against Moldova to be sued at law

Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Decision-makers guilty of losing lawsuits at the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) against Moldova will pay damages, Justice Minister Vladimir Cebotari told a news conference today.
The official noted that it was about 37 judges and prosecutors who had violated citizens’ rights, and would be sued at law to recover the damage inflicted by files lost at ECHR.
The minister said “these people are to compensate the monetary value of the material and moral damages, i.e. the expenses born to compensate the violated rights of citizens and enterprises. To compensate the damages caused to Moldova, the Justice Ministry will pursue including the personal assets of the people guilty of these actions”.
Cebotari said that “in this first stage, the files regard domestic violence, illegal revision of irrevocable rulings, illegal preventive detention, medical data protection, hearing a case in plaintiff’s absence and others”.
“The launched actions are meant to enhance responsibility of actors both in the justice sector and entire public field, in order to observe rights and interests of people”, Vladimir Cebotari added.
In 2015, Moldova lost 17 lawsuits at ECHR; the other two decisions pronounced by the High Court have not yet entered into force. As for another 12 rulings, the sides resolved the conflict amicably.
