Today court session on case of former Moldovan premier postponed

12:30 | 02.02.2016 Category: Social

Chisinau, 2 February /MOLDPRES/- The court session on the file of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat, scheduled for today, has been postponed on health grounds. Filat’s lawyer, Igor Popa, made a statement to this effect today.

According to him, the court session will be held on 17 February at 10:30.

“The reason for postponing was a conclusion issued by the penitentiary’s doctors, according to whom Vlad Filat suffers from chronic otitis and is unable to attend the court session. At this stage of the trial, sessions cannot be held if the accused is not present,” Popa said.

“The factors are objective and we believe it is right to put human treatment above any other rights of the court. Vlad Filat is currently being offered medical assistance in the penitentiary. As far as I know, doctors prescribed him a treatment as well,” Popa noted.

It is the fourth failed attempt to hold a court session on the file of former Prime Minister Vlad Filat. Another session on this case was held on 26 January 2016.

Vlad Filat was detained on 15 October 2015, under a warrant issued by the National Anticorruption Centre, after the parliament had ruled to strip him of immunity.

On 18 October, the Buiucani court of Chisinau issued a warrant of preventive arrest to the former prime minister for 30 days, and judges extended the MP's arrest by another 30 days on 11 November and 10 December. On 5 January, the Buiucani court ruled to prolong the former premier's warrant of arrest by another 90 days.
