Moldovan foreign minister meets NATO Deputy Secretary General

Chisinau, 8 February /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Andrei Galbur had a meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the NATO Alexander Vershbow, within a meeting to the Alliance’s headquarters today, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication department has reported.
The two officials exchanged opinions on the Moldova-NATO cooperation agenda. Galbur and Vershbow paid increased attention to the march of implementation of the goals seen in the Individual Partnership Action Plan. In this context, Minister Andrei Galbur reiterated the Moldovan authorities’ commitment to press ahead with the reformation and modernisation of the national security and defence sector, in line with the new developments and requirements of the international security environment.
The Moldovan official also referred to the priority objectives of the Moldovan government, in particular, the ones in terms of measures due to be undertaken to improve the social and economic situation in Moldova, reform the justice, fight corruption, enforce the provisions of the Association Agreement. Andrei Galbur highlighted the Filip cabinet’s commitment to promote dialogue with the civil society and foreign development partners, in order to overcome the difficulties the country has been facing on the last period.
For his part, NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow invoked the security problems Moldova was confronting with and confirmed the firm support on behalf of the North Atlantic Alliance for Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The NATO official also reiterated the Alliance’s willingness to further provide the needed expertise and assistance to promote reforms, especially the ones for modernising the Moldovan security and defence sector. At the same time, Alexander Vershbow appreciated Moldova’s valuable contribution to strengthening the European stability and security, in particular, by detaching the Moldovan military contingent to the KFOR operation in Kosovo.
The two officials emphasized the importance to set up a NATO liaison office in Chisinau, implement the Defence Capacity Building Initiative, as well as to continue the cooperation in the sectors of strategic communication and cyber security.
