Liberal Democrats propose amending Constitution in parliament to elect Moldovan president by direct voting

14:32 | 09.02.2016 Category: Political

Chisinau, 9 February /MOLDPRES/ - The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) today informed that 11 MPs of the PLDM faction had signed a legislative initiative on the amendment of the Constitution, so that the Moldovan president be elected by direct voting.

A Liberal Democrat lawmaker, Chiril Lucinschi, said “the initiative comes as a response to statements made by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu, who voiced the parliamentary majority’s willingness to back the holding of a national referendum on this issue.”

“A deficient constitutional model was created by the interventions to the text of the Constitution from 2000, which triggered more blockages and political crises. Therefore, we urge all MPs who said that they support this constitutional amendment, to come and sign the draft submitted by PLDM,” Lucinschi said.

Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu has recently said that the draft on the election of the head of state by people’s direct voting would be put up to vote in parliament, in order to avoid efforts of collecting signatures for holding a referendum on Constitution’s amendment.

To be able to be submitted to the Constitutional Court for approval, the draft on amendments of the way of the president’s election must be signed by at least 34 MPs.
