PM meets representatives of Moldovan banking community

Chisinau, 9 February /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Pavel Filip today had a meeting with representatives of the Moldovan Banks Association (ABM) and the leaders of the country’s commercial banks. Attending the event were Deputy Prime Minister, Economics Minister Octavian Calmic, Finance Minister Octavian Armasu and Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) Dorin Dragutanu, the government’s communication and media relations department has reported.
The prime minister noted that he had wanted to have this discussion as a continuation of a meeting with the business environment, held in late last January. Filip stressed that he deemed as indispensable aspects on the work of the commercial banks and the evolution of the economic situation in Moldova. The prime minister also referred to the cabinet’s medium-term priorities and goals set to improve the situation in the financial and banking system, as well as for Moldova’s economic development. Pavel Filip said the government was determined to provide concrete results in carrying out reforms, referring including to the decisions adopted by the cabinet to facilitate the activity of enterprises. In this context, the prime minister highlighted the role of commercial banks for developing the business environment. Filip emphasized that the governmental team relied on an open and constructive dialogue with all partners in this process.
The participants in the meeting discussed subjects on adjusting the national legislative framework to the international standards in the financial and economic sector, turning transparent the shareholders of stock companies, removing anti-competition obstacles, reducing the effects of monopoly on the market and unfair competition, identifying solutions to pay arrears of budgetary institutions to entrepreneurs and returning the value added tax (VAT) from enterprises’ exports.
The sides exchanged opinions on the process of reformation of the banking system. Prime Minister Pavel Filip said the government’s goal was to edify a stable and functional banking system in Moldova and ensure the country’s sustainable development.
The head of the Moldovan Banks’ Association, Nicolae Dorin, welcomed the prime minister’s initiative to hold periodical discussions on subjects of major importance with those who enforce the state’s policies in the financial and banking field and proposed that the consultations be organised quarterly.
