Moldovan speaker, EU justice mission experts hold talks

Chisinau, 24 February /MOLDPRES/-Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu today held a meeting with a group of experts of the EU justice mission, the parliament’s communication and media relations department has reported.

The talks focused on progress and arrears in the implementation of the justice reform in Moldova, fighting corruption and alignment of legislative framework with EU standards.

Candu highlighted that Moldova’s priority was to boost up the implementation of the Association Agreement and the reforms it provides for. Moldova also wants to resume talks with the International Monetary Fund. According to him, real and efficient reforms in the justice sector and corruption field will help citizens and development partners regain their confidence in a correct and independent justice act.  

“The parliament’s agenda includes a string of important draft laws to boost up the justice reform. Among them, there is the prosecution law in second reading and related laws, as well as the integrity law package. Authorities are firmly determined to implement the recommendations of the EU justice mission and complete the justice reform,” Candu noted.

The Moldovan speaker said the implementation of EU good practices and expertise in the justice field, will help Moldovan law institutions consolidate their functional capacities and enhance fight against corruption. Also, Candu said Moldovan authorities were carrying out an action plan to boost up the implementation of the Association Agreement and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, which includes implementation deadlines and persons in charge.

The EU justice mission is currently taking place in Moldova at the request of the parliament speaker and prime minister. It is meant to assess the efficiency of Moldovan law institutions, such as the Prosecutor General’s Office, National Anticorruption Centre, National Integrity Commission, Superior Council of Magistrates, Supreme Court of Justice, National Justice Institute, Constitutional Court and the Ombudsman’s office. The conclusions and recommendations of the EU justice mission will be unveiled in spring 2016.
