Chisinau, 10 March /MOLDPRES/-The first batch of humanitarian food aid donated by the Romanian government to Moldova, represented by nine trucks loaded with sugar, with a total value of more than 250 thousand lei, arrived to Chisinau today.
Attending the food aid’s reception ceremony, Romanian Ambassador to Moldova Marius Lazurca said those were the first 203 tons of sugar out of the 1,000 tons of humanitarian aid Moldova was still going to receive soon.
“We are at the beginning of a process that will continue in the next weeks. Five similar shipments will be carried out to Moldova to deliver food products to vulnerable families. We will complete the humanitarian aid operation by delivering over 16 tons of fuel oil to supplement Moldova's reserves for emergency situations,” Lazurca said.
For his part, Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega said this batch of humanitarian aid is first of all aimed to reach kindergartens and schools, as well as shelters for elder and vulnerable people, along with other social categories. “The National Commission for Humanitarian Aids will issue a decision on the distribution of the sugar in all Moldovan districts. Subsequently, local public authorities shall collaborate with mayors and distribute this product. A part of the aid will be used to supplement the state reserve,” Brega noted.
Moldovan Prime Minister Pavel Filip asked Romanian authorities for humanitarian aid on 10 February 2016 to back Moldovan vulnerable families hurt by the difficult economic crisis. The Romanian government on 18 February 2016 decided to respond to Moldovan authorities’ requests and grant Moldova free humanitarian aid accounting for 16.690 million lei (the equivalent of 83.7 million Moldovan lei).
