Moldovan parliament elects new Governor of National Bank of Moldova

Chisinau, 11 March /MOLDPRES/ - Sergiu Cioclea today was elected Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM). Cioclea’s candidacy was backed in parliament with the votes of 61 MPs.

According to Cioclea, among his priorities, there is improvement of the situation in the financial and banking sector, reforming the banking system and facilitating the access of private people to loans.

“My goal is that, at the end of mandate, there is a modernized banking system in Moldova, with foreign investors, with facilitating access to loans, where multiple methods of control, assessors of assets will persist, so that the financial and banking sphere is stable and safe,” Cioclea said.    

Sergiu Cioclea was put forward by the contest commission of the parliament speaker to hold the office of governor of the National Bank. The commission considered nine files, interviewed and assessed the professional and managerial performances of the candidates, and Sergiu Cioclea gained most points, 903 out of 1,000.

The new BNM governor is 42 years old and has an experience of more than 17 years of work in the financial and banking sector. Cioclea is in charge of Central and Eastern Europe of the Economic Research Department at BNP PARIBAS – one of the main investment banks of France and the biggest banking group of the European Union.  

Sergiu Cioclea was appointed BNM Governor starting from 11 April 2016, for s even-year mandate.
