United States to further back Moldova in reforming security system

Chisinau, 24 March /MOLDPRES/- The United States will further back Moldova and National Army through projects aimed at creating a well-prepared army, trained at international standards. U.S. Supreme Allied Commander in Europe Philip M. Breedlove made a statement to this effect at a today’s meeting with Defence Minister Anatol Salaru.

The American official, on a first ever working visit to Moldova, said that Moldova was a reliable partner and could count on the support of USA and NATO in achieving the set goals. The U.S. general highlighted the National Army’s role in strengthening peace and security regionally and internationally, by participating with troops in peacekeeping operations, along with services from the USA and other states.

For his part, Salaru appreciated the significant contribution of the U.S. Government to reforming and modernising the defence institution from Moldova, by implementing priority projects for the National Army, such as: expertise in legislation sector, logistic support and training in American military schools.

The sides reviewed the current stage of the bilateral relations in the military sector between Moldova and the USA, as well as the possibility to extend them by implementing projects of common interest in different fields.

Following the meeting, the two officials went to the training military base of the National Army and talked to Moldovan and American servicemen participating in the JCET-2016 exercise.

The two officials will familiarize with the process of renovation of the shooting ground, carried out with financial support of the United States, within the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI). The 1.6 million dollars, meant for the project, is used for developing the training infrastructure of the National Army, which will enhance possibility for Moldova to participate in international operations.

The American official is on a visit to Moldova on 23-24 March within a tour to the region.
