Chisinau, 31 March /MOLDPRES/- The parliament today adopted a political declaration on the inviolability of the sovereignty, independence and permanent neutrality of Moldova. The declaration was supported with the votes of 62 MPs.
The Party of Communists (PCRM) proposed the document at a 25 March parliament meeting; subsequently it was backed by the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Democratic Party (PDM) and former Communist lawmakers. The MPs of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) and Liberal Party (PL) did not back the document, describing it as populist. After more debates, the declaration was not put to vote, for lack of quorum.
Under the document, “the parliament, within its competence, takes obligation to improve legislation of Moldova, in order to counteract and make inadmissible attacks on the constitutional principles of independence and neutrality of our country, including by establishing the toughening of liability for such actions”.
The declaration is appealing to all international organizations, as well as to the countries of the world to back “the initiative on preserving the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and neutrality of Moldova, as well as to contribute to strengthening efforts aimed at defending the Moldovan statehood. Supporting the country as an independent, sovereign and neutral state will help enhance security both in region and in Europe on the whole”, the declaration says.
