Moldovan speaker introduces new governor of National Bank of Moldova

Chisinau, 11 April /MOLDPRES/- Sergiu Cioclea starts its activity as governor of the National Bank of Moldova (BNM) today. Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu introduced the new governor to BNM’s employees. Attending the event was also former BNM governor, Dorin Dragutanu, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.
“Moldova is going through challenging times, especially its economy and financial-banking system. However, I am sure your professionalism and western experience will help you succeed and face political challenges with respect. I wish you success, patience, integrity and professionalism,” the parliament speaker told Sergiu Cioclea at the beginning of his mandate as BNM governor.
Candu also thanked Dragutanu for the efforts he took to stabilize BNM’s exchange rate and lower the inflation rate. The parliament speaker also said the efforts and correct decisions taken by some professional people, helped avoid certain unpleasant situations which could have happened in Moldova, as a consequence of the bank fraud.
“The experience of BNM’s new governor is currently peerless in Moldova. BNM has a sober and professional leadership now, able to accomplish this difficult mission,” former BNM governor Dorin Dragutanu said. He also wished success to the new governor.
For his part, the new BNM governor said he was ready to face all the challenges, realizing the difficulty degree of his mandate. “I thank the parliament for trusting me during such hard times for Moldova. Since the beginning, I have always had special respect for BNM’s staff. BNM has a group of professional employees, able to operate during extremely difficult economic conditions. I will try to discuss with all the employees to ensure the continuity of BNM’s activity and also update it, in order to improve Moldova’s economic-financial situation,” Cioclea said.
Sergiu Cioclea was appointed as BNM governor on 11 March 2016, with the votes of 61 MPs. His candidacy was selected during a public contest, organized for the first time ever at the initiative of the Moldovan parliament speaker. The new governor is 42 years old and has a 17-year experience in the financial-banking sector. Nine people participated in the contest for selecting a candidate for the BNM governor position.
