Moldovan parliament creates council for European integration

Chisinau, 13 April /MOLDPRES/- The parliament has set up the Council for European Integration, meant to ensure a mechanism of communication and coordination in Moldova’s European integration process and of adjusting the national legislation to the EU one. The parliament’s Standing Bureau adopted a decision to this end, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.

The parliamentary Council for European Integration will monitor the implementation of the EU-Moldova Association Agreement and will ensure the enforcement of the legislative programme on carrying out the commitments of transposition, assumed within the Association Agreement. At the same time, the Council will coordinate aspects in terms of implementation of European integration policies and will organize public hearings on the matter, will exercise parliamentary control on the enforcement of the Association Agreement and Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with EU.

The MPs members of Council will participate in working out a strategy of Moldova’s European integration and will monitor the activity and performance of parliamentary delegations in European forums. The parliamentary Council for European Integration will be entitled to ask the government to present information on European integration, to hear government members and issue opinions on Moldova’s stance in the relation with EU, to monitor negotiations between government and EU institutions, exercise control over government as regards the use of financial instruments and European assistance.

The council will be periodically informed by government, via the Foreign and European Integration Ministry, about subjects of interest for Moldova, which are on the European agenda, results of negotiations, degree of meeting the commitments of legislation’s approximation, draft laws due to be submitted by the government to parliament, with a view of implementing results of talks with EU, way of using European funds.

The council is led by Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu. It is made up of 15 members, including the Deputy Speakers, the nine heads of commissions, the chiefs of the Parliamentary Association Committee Moldova-EU and of the Moldovan Delegation to the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly, Secretary General of parliament and head of the parliament secretariat’s general legal department.

According to the regulation of work, the Council for European Integration convenes once a month, as a rule, at public meetings.
