Chisinau, 14 April /MOLDPRES/- The Chisinau-based Court of Appeal today accepted an application by the initiative group for organizing a constitutional referendum and cancelled a 30 March decision by the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), under which the proposal for organizing the referendum was rejected. The Court’s spokeswoman, Octeabrina Popa, confirmed the information.
The constitutional referendum was focused on changing the way the head of state is elected, reducing the number of MPs to 71 and limiting their immunity.
On 30 March, CEC head Iurie Ciocan said that “the commission ascertained that the initiative group did not present 20,000 signatures from at least half of the territorial and administrative units."
The CEC decision was appealed at the Court of Appeal on 5 April.
On 14 March, the Dignity and Truth Platform members submitted over 400,000 signatures to CEC for holding a republican referendum on revising the Constitution. The draft for amending the Constitution was presented at CEC on 5 November.
The decision can be appealed at the Supreme Court of Justice via the Court of Appeal during three days upon its issuing.
