Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Liberal Party (PL) has initiated a campaign of collecting signatures for holding a referendum on the dismissal of Moldovan President Igor Dodon. PL leader Mihai Ghimpu made statements to this effect at a news conference today.
The Liberals’ leader motivated the initiative by the fact that the head of state would have violated the Moldovan Constitution. “Igor Dodon made more anti-constitutional statements and actions, which imposes us presently to start the procedure of dismissal through referendum. I have earlier submitted to parliament a draft decision on the president’s suspension from office; yet, we have no enough signatures for the draft to be registered and considered in parliament; therefore, we want to do the dismissal with the help of citizens. The initiative is grounded by the fact that Igor Dodon undertook more anti-constitutional actions concerning the Transnistrian region, the attempt to turn Moldova into a federal state, as well as his participation in the 9 May parade in Moscow. I am the first to sign on this list and I hope that the citizens will join our initiative,” Ghimpu said.
For his part, the spokesman for the head of state, Ion Ceban, said that “it is very good that the present ruling coalition, an active component of which is the Liberal Party, wants a referendum against President Igor Dodon. We are ready to start a new confrontation with this government and we will prove once again that we enjoy the support of the absolute majority of the citizens,” Ceban said.
According to the Electoral Code, it is necessary to collect 200,000 signatures to initiate a referendum on the dismissal of the Moldovan president.
