Moldovan Liberals launch campaign on informing Chisinau residents about achievements of capital's mayor

Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Liberal Party (PL) has launched a campaign on informing the Chisinau residents about the achievements of the Moldovan capital’s general mayor, Dorin Chirtoaca. PL leader Mihai Ghimpu made statements to this effect at a news conference today.  

According to Ghimpu, the Socialists’ initiative to dismiss the Chisinau mayor would be groundless, as the mayor “fulfills all duties in the office held.” “It is not for the first time that the Socialists initiated the collection of signatures for the dismissal of the general mayor. They are frustrated for having lost the elections in the capital and Chisinau is the “fortress” they cannot conquer,” Ghimpu said. 

Also, the PL leader noted that the lawyers of Dorin Chirtoaca had recently appealed at the Supreme Court of Justice the decision on registration of the initiative group for the collection of signatures for a referendum on the dismissal of the Chisinau mayor.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the Legal Assistance Department at the Capital’s City Hall, Valeriu Bogdan, said that the lawyers had demanded suspension of the decision by the Court of Appeal. “The Supreme Court of Justice will issue a ruling in a period of approximately one month, as the case is topical,” Bogdan said.

In late last April, the Court of Appeal admitted an application by the Socialists on registration of an initiative group for collecting signatures to initiate a referendum on the dismissal of general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca. Subsequently, the Chisinau law court handed the subscription lists and the identity cards to the members of the initiative group, in order to collect the signatures needed.  

To be able to organize a referendum on the dismissal of the Moldovan capital’s mayor, the initiative group has at its disposal 60 days to collect about 64,000 signatures.

At the same time, the head of the initiative group, Socialist councilor Ion Ceban today morning informed that over 29,000 signatures had been collected till 17 May evening.
