Moldovan speaker attends event on International Day of UN Peacekeepers

Chisinau, 29 May /MOLDPRES/- The number of soldiers involved in peacekeeping missions should increase, Parliament Speaker Andrian Candu said today on the occasion of International Day of UN Peacekeepers.
According to the parliament’s communication and public relations department, Candu noted that it is important to involve men and women in a larger number of missions.
“Participation in international missions is a plus of experience, knowledge transfer and cohesion among the National Armed Forces. By involving in UN efforts to maintain international peace and security, Moldova is transformed from a beneficiary state into a generator and supplier of state security”, he said.
The speaker thanked the troops for devotion to promote the image of Moldova in peacekeeping operations and paid homage to the sacrifice of peacekeepers. Also, four soldiers were awarded outstanding achievements.
“Participation of our soldiers in peacekeeping operations is based on foreign policy efforts of Moldova, as a member state of the United Nations, to promote alongside the international community peace, stability, security and peaceful conflict resolution and post-conflict support for states in difficulty”, he said.
Attending the event were also Deputy Defence Minister Gheorghe Galbura, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Moldova Dafina Gercheva, military attaches accredited to Chisinau, National Army soldiers.
The National Army servicemen have been involved in peacekeeping operations during 20 years in Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sudan, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Iraq, Georgia, Tajikistan, Ukraine with a total of 300 officers and non-commissioned officers
