Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/ - The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) has commented on the Liberal Party’s (PL) withdrawal from the ruling coalition. PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc made statements to this effect today, following a weekly working meeting of the formation.
At a news briefing, the PDM leader noted that the Liberals’ decision would have been taken for two reasons. “The first reason is dealing with the emotional factor, and another one is a possible wish of PL to restore its forces for the 2018 parliamentary elections, being in opposition. The anticorruption actions should not have prompted their leaving, they should have remained inside the justice sector and not among parties or the political system,” Plahotniuc said.
At the same time, the Democrats’ leader stressed that PD had anticipated PL’s leave from the governance. “I knew that problems would be dealing with the moment chosen for the government’s reformation. Although we had a common vision, the Liberals wanted the reform to be carried out later, while we want it to be made now. For electoral reasons, it was ideal to postpone the reform until after the polls; yet, the situation in Moldova imposes them to be carried out now, as their adjourning is not possible,” Vlad Plahotniuc said.
“We do not criticize and do not judge the PL’s decision; we observe it and we will move forward. We had a very good political partnership with the Liberal colleagues; we did many important things for the country and for people. Even if with PL outside the Coalition, I hope that we will cooperate politically on drafts beneficial for the country and for people. There is no doubt that the ruling Coalition will further work and the government has a strong political mandate to implement the government’s action programme,” Plahotniuc said.
PL in late last week informed that it left the parliamentary majority, after Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca, as well as other Liberal officials had been detained. The education and environment ministers and deputy ministers on 29 May submitted applications on resignation and Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Brega had earlier submitted an application on leave, which started on 29 May.
