Council of Europe to continue backing Moldova

Chisinau, 30 May /MOLDPRES/ – The representatives of the parliamentary factions met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland on an official visit to the Republic of Moldova today, the parliament's communication and public relations department has reported.
The sides discussed the projects included in the Council of Europe Action Plan for Moldova for 2017-2010. Andrian Candu thanked the Council of Europe for the expertise offered to Moldova. The Speaker called for the Secretary General of the Council of Europe to support the organization of the Days of Moldova in Strasbourg in autumn 2017.
Thorbjorn Jagland said that Moldova would continue to be supported by the Council of Europe in consolidating the rule of law and media freedom so that citizens could have independent and balanced justice, state institutions that operate democratically and fight effectively corruption.
At his part, MP Mihai Ghimpu referred to the Liberal Party's (PL) decision to turn into opposition and the arrest of more leaders of the party.
The Liberal Democratic Party’s (PLDM) MP Tudor Deliu said that there was a lot to do in Moldova, and the fight against corruption to be "just a facade".
The MP Maria Postoico presented a series of concerns expressed by the Communists’ Party (PCRM), referring to the alleged political migration through corruption in the Parliament, the non-solution of the NIT television case, a series of constitutional and electoral changes.
The Democrat’s MP Violeta Ivanov welcomed the reforms started in Moldova, stating that they were painful but necessary for the continuation of the European path of Moldova, the approximation of the national legislation to the European directives and the good change of citizens' lives.
The representatives of all parliamentary factions, as well as the MPs who are part of the Legislative Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, were invited to the talks.
