Moldovan government's measures upon strengthening banking sector appreciated by World Bank

Chisinau, 02 June /MOLDPRES/ – Prime Minister Pavel Filip met with the World Bank (WB) Group Country Director for Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, Satu Kahkonen, today. The officials discussed the importance of the support provided by the financial institution to the Republic of Moldova and about the new cooperation priorities, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Prime Minister assured that the Moldovan authorities were aware of the benefits of the partnership with the WB and made the necessary efforts to make full use of its potential. However, the Cabinet of Ministers got actively involved in the process of consulting the new Partnership Strategy with the Country Bank of the WB for the fiscal period 2018-2021, to be approved soon, as well as in the elaboration of the Policy Matrix of the Program Development policy operations in the area of economic governance.
"Our partnership is a dynamic one. We have received support in implementing several public sector reforms, such as health, road infrastructure, education, the social sector and the energy sector. We have also collaborated in implementing measures to improve the business climate. This continuous support from which we benefit is a very important one for us. The framework of assistance is related to the Government's priorities and allows us to develop," said Pavel Filip.
At his part, Satu Kahkonen, Country Director of the WB Group for Belarus, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, congratulated the Executive for the accomplished actions, including the approval of an Agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the implementation of measures to strengthen the banking sector in the Republic of Moldova. "We are happy that it has been made progress in this area and we hope that these reforms will continue. The WB is ready to continue supporting the implementation of the launched actions," said Satu Kahkonen.
Also, at the meeting was the new Head of the World Bank Office in Moldova, Anna Akhalkatsi, who has got extensive experience working within the WB and within the International Financial Corporation. The new country manager will start work at the end of July. In the context, Premier Pavel Filip said that the Government appreciated the efforts made by Alex Kremer within his mandate and thanked him for his involvement in the development of Moldova’s modernization projects. Similarly, the PM wished success in the activity of the new representative of the institution in the Republic of Moldova.
"We will continue to implement beneficial projects for citizens. My and the governmental team goal is that until the parliamentary elections we have a country with many developed reforms that will actually produce effects for people. Another objective is to make the European path irreversible, too. There is already a positive dynamics in this respect, which indicates to us that we are moving in the right direction", said Pavel Filip.
