Five former members of credit committee of Savings Bank of Moldova to be investigated on bank fraud case

Chisinau, 12 June /MOLDPRES/- Five former members of the credit committee of the Savings Bank (Banca de Economii) will be prosecuted for violating the crediting rules and causing the financial institution the damages in large proportions. The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office completed criminal investigation and sent to court the eleventh file on fraud of BEM.
According to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, in 2010-2011, former head, in complicity with four other members of BEM, granted bad loans to four companies worth 197 million lei. Although, under the legislation, the credit committee had to intervene and stop granting the financial means, the defendants did not take action in this regard, damaging the banking institution in particularly large proportions.
The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office sent to the court 11 criminal cases accusing the defendants of committing several episodes of bad lending from BEM sources. Currently, the former head of the BEM credit committee is under preventive arrest, and his accomplices are investigated at large.
In order to recover the damage caused to the BEM, several seizures were applied, including property belonging to the accused.
If found guilty, the suspects are liable to a fine or imprisonment of up to 7 years, in both cases depriving them of the right to hold certain positions or to practice certain activities for up to 5 years.
