Former Moldovan prosecutor general, six persons detained for abuse of office

Chisinau, 12 June /MOLDPRES/ - One former prosecutor general and another six persons today were detained by anticorruption officers for abuse of office, on the acquisition, for the Prosecutor General’s Office, of a building at an artificially high price and contracting works for its construction with serious infringements of the legislation.  

According to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the former prosecutor general would have instructed, in 2005, the purchasing of an unfinished building on the Alexandru cel Bun Street 100 at a price of nine million lei, while its price, according to the latest evaluation, was just a little more than 2.5 million lei. At the same time, the acquisition took place without the organization of a public tender and in the lack of project documentation that would be checked and authorized properly.    

Subsequently, without holding an authorized project on reconstruction and the act on evaluating the needed works, the members of the tender group, set up under an order of the former prosecutor general, nominated an economic agent as general entrepreneur for the reconstruction works. Also, the former prosecutor general signed with this economic agent an enterprise contract, ignoring the legal provisions.      

Over 18.8 million lei was paid from the state budget in all, with the building being unfinished till present too. At the same time, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) was attracted by an economic agent into a civil litigation; the enterprise claims the collection, at the expense of PG, of more than six million lei for alleged works carried out, but unpaid.   

All people were escorted to the headquarters of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, heard as suspects and detained. If found guilty, the suspects run the risk of being sentenced to up to ten years of imprisonment, with deprivation of the right to hold certain offices or carry out a certain activity for a period from 10 and 15 years.
