Moldova commemorates 128th anniversary of death of great Romanian poet

Chisinau, 15 June /MOLDPRES/ - More cultural events today were organized in Chisinau and all over Moldova, on the occasion of the 128th anniversary of the passing away of the great national poet, Mihai Eminescu, named The Evening Star of the Romanian Poetry.

Writers, art men, politicians and poetry lovers today morning laid flowers at the bust of Mihai Eminescu in the Alley of Classics of the Romanian Literature from the Chisinau-based Stefan cel Mare public garden. The action was followed by a literary and musical recital.

In his speech, the moderator of the event, the head of the Moldovan Writers’ Union (USM) Arcadie Suceveanu said that Mihai Eminescu was more than a poet, “he is a national conscience, a great symbol under which our actions were held in the years of national liberation, when we fought for language and alphabet, for our national identify.”

For his part, the deputy USM deputy head, Teo Chiriac, stressed that 15 June is a day of commemoration, a day of memory, of thinking about our national problems. “There are fewer of us here today. Maybe it is the case to avoid some speeches, words uncovered by deeds. Maybe we have learned to die, but we have debts in terms of memory,” Teo Chiriac said.    

At the same time, the director of the Mihai Eminescu Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), Valeriu Matei, emphasized that to pay homage to Eminescu means to pay homage to the Romanian language and spirituality.     

In continuation, actor Alexandru Plesca presented a recital of poems. He was followed by more people in love with Eminescu’s works, who paid homage to the great poet today. In the context, a student at the International Free University of Moldova, Viny Laury Obosso Ensombe, born in Congo, said that Mihai Eminescu had been a romantic poet, who loved nature and life.      

The events dedicated to commemorating the 128th anniversary of the death of poet Mihai Eminescu will culminate with a festive concert, organized by ICR Chisinau in concert with the Romanian Embassy in Moldova, held at the Serghei Lunchevici National Philharmonic today at 18:00.

Mihai Eminescu, considered by the posthumous literary critic as the most important poetic voice in the Romanian literature, was born in Botosani, Romania, on 15 January 1850. He died in Bucharest on 15 June 1889. Eminescu was buried at the Bellu Cemetery from Bucharest. On 28 October 1948, Mihai Eminescu was posthumously elected member of the Romanian Academy.
