Moldovan Democrats' leader meets vice president of ALDE group in European parliament

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/- The leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) Vlad Plahotniuc held a meeting with Vice President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) group in the European Parliament Norica Nicolai, according to the party’s press service.

Plahotniuc presented to the MEP the actions of the government and plans to reform the country and the political establishment. In this context, Norica Nicolai assured that the Moldovan government has all the EU support, and noted that reforms in Moldovan justice are appreciated in Brussels.

Another topic was related to the change in the electoral system in Moldova. In this context, Norica Nicolai noted “political opportunity issues must be decided by national parliaments by consulting all political parties. Following the expertise of the Venice Commission, technical moments will have to be discussed and accepted when the new electoral law is approved. The EU cannot impose a particular voting system to a state, and should not affect the macro-financial assistance for Moldova maintaining the current electoral system”, Norica Nicolai said.

Plahotniuc also met MEPs who contest the intention to change the electoral system in Moldova. During a meeting with MP Cristian Preda, Plahotniuc reminded that the mixed electoral system was previously promoted by the Liberal Democratic Party, and PDM assumed to complete this change. For his part, Preda said he does not think it opportune to amend the electoral system in Moldova, as this could be a danger for the country’s multiparty system.

At the same time, PDM leader called for European officials to support the law on banning Russian propaganda in Moldovan media, an initiative backed by Brussels officials.

Meetings will continue throughout today.
