Moldova signs framework agreement with Nordic Environment Finance Corporation

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/- Moldova and the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO) today signed framework agreement on bilateral cooperation. “It is an event of national importance that opens a new perspective in our external support, especially, for financing in energy efficiency projects”, Deputy Prime Minister, Economics Minister Octavian Calmic said.

Calmic also said that enhancing energy efficiency is a sector that should be a priority given even if much has been done in this area, Moldova has not yet got closer to European standards. “NEFCO experience is useful for our country”, he said.

The document was signed by Calmic and Magnus Rystedt, NEFCO managing director.

NEFCO launch activity in Moldova will create a real opportunity for local authorities to finance projects in the energy efficiency, renewable energy and environment, he said.

The Nordic Environment Finance Corporation was set up in 1990 by Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. NEFCO’s activities are coordinated from the head office of the Corporation located in Helsinki. NEFCO provides financial support for a wide variety of energy and environmental projects, especially, in Central and Eastern European countries. Also, it finances projects in the thermo-energy, green energy production, as well as waste management projects.

Projects supported by NEFCO have a value of up to 5 million euros and are mainly implemented in municipalities and cities.

On 16 October 2014, the government and EBRD signed a contribution agreement on Moldova’s participation in Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P). By signing this agreement, the government may claim about 150 million euros, of which 30 million euros – as grant component. NEFCO is one of the international financial institutions that assume the role of implementing agency of the E5P-funded projects. Moldova could benefit from support and carry out several projects to increase energy efficiency, green energy production, thus reducing carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions.
