Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ – The magistrates of Chisinau Court, Buiucani sector condemned Orhei city mayor, Ilan Shor, to seven years and six months of imprisonment.
The prosecutors initially demanded to sentence Ilan Shor to 19 years of detention.
The decision was made after almost two hours of deliberations. Also, Ilan Shor was released from custody until the final sentence was delivered. The mayor of Orhei will be detained in a semi-closed penitentiary.
Ilan Shor was initially present at the hearing, and later he left the court. According to his lawyers, he accused of health problems, being called the ambulance.
Following the pronouncement of the sentence, the prosecutor Andrei Basescu mentioned that the decision would be unfounded and too soft. “During the criminal investigation, but also during the case examination, it was obtained sufficient evidence demonstrating the guilt of Ilan Shor,” said the prosecutor.
Similarly, the lawyers of Ilan Shor specified that they would appeal the sentence to the Court of Appeal, as this would be too harsh.
On 22 June, it expires a year since Ilan Shor has been under preventive arrest. The General Prosecutor’s Office initiated a criminal investigation related to Ilan Shor in December 2014, regarding suspicious transactions between Banca de Economii a Moldovei (BEM) and the Social Bank. He is accused of cheating in excess of five billion lei in 2014 by BEM, which he would have washed through dozens of off-shore companies, a sum confirmed by the Kroll Memorandum.
