Chisinau, 22 June /MOLDPRES/- The National Strategy on Radioactive Waste Management for 2017-2026 will be published in the Official Journal of Moldova on 23 June.
The new strategy will create the necessary legislative framework for the implementation of the international commitments resulting from the Joint Convention on Safety of Spent Fuel Management and Radioactive Waste, as well as the international nuclear-radiological agreements adopted by Moldova.
The document aims to provide favorable conditions for safe and conforming radiological activity. The strategy sets out the goals, directions of action and specific measures needed to protect the population and environment from the harmful effects of the radioactive sources, as long as they represent a radiological hazard.
In order to implement the strategy, financial resources will be earmarked from the state budget, as well as from the external financial assistance granted to Moldova in the cooperation projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
According to statistics from the National Register of Ionizing Radiation Sources, over 6,000 radioactive sources are in Moldova. Most of them contain radionuclids with a half-life of about 30 years.
