Chisinau, 27 June /MOLDPRES/ – The draft on amendment of the voting system will be brought in line with recommendations of the Venice Commission. The announcement was made by the leader of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vlad Plahotniuc, during a briefing today.
According to Plahotniuc, the Legislature will consider the Venice Commission’s recommendations, but will promote the draft on amendment to the voting system. “We have shown our partners that we are open to taking into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission, but we are also determined to keep in mind the citizens’ desire to be better represented in Parliament. As soon as possible, the work on the preparation of the draft for the second reading will be commenced and will be strictly in line with the Venice Commission’s recommendations,” said Plahotniuc.
The PDM leader called for opposition to debates on the draft on amendment to the electoral system and denied the information that the EU would condition the granting of macro-financial assistance of €100 million to the draft on amendment of the electoral system.
“In talks with Brussels leaders, nobody has conditioned to offer money that way. The discussions focused on meeting those recommendations of the Venice Commission, but not on conditionality or other types of pressure. It is hard to imagine how the EU could stop financing a country, merely because people are given the right to elect their own MPs,” said Plahotniuc.
More information had emerged in press that the EU would not offer the financial support of €100 million to Moldova if changing the electoral system.
