Moldovan judge detained for 72 hours

Chisinau, 27 June /MOLDPRES/ - Judge Oleg Melniciuc was detained for 72 hours today.
The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, Viorel Morari, has confirmed the information for MOLDPRES.
Anticorruption prosecutors today made searches in the office of the Chisinau law court, Oleg Melniciuc, within a file opened against him for illegal enrichment.
Prosecutor General Eduard Harunjen today asked the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) for its agreement to carry out investigation actions against Melniciuc.
According to Viorel Morari, “CSM gave its agreement only for the detaining of Melniciuc, not also for his arrest.”
Oleg Melniciuc is the first magistrate criminally prosecuted under the Article 330-2, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code, Illegal Enrichment.
If found guilty, Melniciuc runs the risk of being fined with 500,000 lei (about 25,000 euros), or to be sentenced for 7-15 years of imprisonment, with the deprivation of right to hold certain offices or exercise a certain activity for a period of 10-15 years.
