Moldovan deputy premier meets delegation of United Kingdom

Chisinau, 27 June /MOLDPRES/ - Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Balan today received a delegation of the United Kingdom, led by Deputy Director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office Jennifer MacNaughtan. The official was accompanied by Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Moldova Lucy Joyce and Interim Deputy of the Mission John Mitchell, the Reintegration Policies Bureau has reported.   

At the meeting, the deputy prime minister informed the British officials about the latest developments in the Transnistrian file, prospects for settlement of the present problems, as well as about the reforms implemented in Moldova.

Referring to the Transnistrian settlement process, Gheorghe Balan stressed that the Moldovan authorities made sustained efforts to maintain active all the current dialogue platforms and to provide needed support to the residents and economic agents from the Transnistrian region.   

Also, the sides tackled such topics as access of farmers from the eastern Dubasari district to their farmlands, ensuring proper conditions of work for the Latin-script schools from the Transnistrian region, present obstacles to the free movement, etc.   

Another subject of discussions was focused on establishing joint control at the Moldovan-Ukrainian state border on its central (Transnistrian) segment, initially at the border checkpoint Kuchurgan-Pervomaysk and then at the other points on the concerned segment. In this respect, Gheorghe Balan said that the measure taken was aimed at simplifying the customs procedures and facilitating the work of the economic agents from the region. In the context, the deputy prime minister stressed that, at present, over 2,400 enterprises from the Transnistrian region are registered by the State Registration Chamber and have possibility to export their goods to the EU markets, by fully benefiting from all current opportunities in the trade with the EU member states.   

For their part, the representatives of the United Kingdom said that the British authorities would further back the promotion of reforms and economic development of Moldova, including in the process of the country’s reintegration.
