Moldovan deputy foreign minister calls in Vienna for giving impetus to the Transnistrian conflict settlement process

Chisinau, 28 June /MOLDPRES/ – Within the frameworks of the OSCE Annual Security Review Conference, held on 27-30 June 2016, in Vienna, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Lilian Darii delivered several statements on issues of the Conference agenda, particularly regarding the prospects of the Transnistrian conflict settlement, the Structured Dialogue, revitalization of arms control mechanisms and promotion of confidence and security building measures in the OSCE area.
According to the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication service, Deputy Minister Darii stressed the importance of resuming negotiations in the "5+2" format to further promote the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, including by identifying practical solutions to problems the population of the country is confronted with due to the conflict. He underscored that those solutions should fall into the ultimate objective of the negotiation process–the developing of a special status for the Transnistrian region while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova.
The Moldovan diplomat also underlined the readiness of the Republic of Moldova to support the Structured Dialogue process aimed at identifying new paradigms for the stability and security in the OSCE area. He mentioned the necessity to maintain the protracted conflicts in the Structured Dialogue concept.
Deputy Minister Darii underlined Moldova’s interest in the modernization of the Vienna Document 2011 on Confidence and Security Building Measures in order to enhance military transparency and security in the OSCE area. In this context, he called for complete withdrawal of Russian Armed Forces from Moldova in accordance with the decisions taken at the OSCE Summit in Istanbul in 1999. He also advocated for transforming the current peacekeeping operation in the Transnistrian region into a multinational civilian mission with an appropriate international mandate.
On the margins of the Conference, Deputy Minister Darii held meetings with the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Kathleen Kavalec and the Special Representative of the Austrian OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the Transnistrian Settlement Process, Ambassador Wolf-Dietrich Heim. The discussions focused on issues related to the latest developments in the Transnistrian settlement process and regional security.
