Moldovan delegation participates in 10th final meeting of Global Forum on migration and development

Chisinau, 29 June /MOLDPRES/ – On 28-30 June 2017, the Tenth Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) Summit is held in Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany. Germany and Morocco assume the co-chairmanship of the GFMD during 2017/2018, the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s information and media communication service has reported.

The final summit brings together over 700 participants, representatives of states and international organizations. The forum also provides a common space for dialogue with civil society.

The meeting was opened by high-profile speakers such as the Special Representative of United Nations Secretary-General for Migration Louise Arbor, GFMD Ambassadors of Germany and Morocco, German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Director General of the International Organization for Migration Williams Lacy Swing, and others who reiterated the need and moral obligation of all actors in the involvement in the current situation of migrants.

The Delegation of the Republic of Moldova is headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Daniela Morari, and includes representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, the Bureau for Diaspora Relations of the State Chancellery and the Border Police Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

During the first semester of 2017, under the auspices of the German Presidency, the Republic of Moldova with the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka co-chaired the round table discussion on: "Policy tools and safeguards for policy coherence: identifying appropriate policies for balance of interests and objectives".

Discussions in this round table were held by representatives of the United States of America, the Swiss Confederation, Georgia, the Philippines, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the private sector.

At the same time, Moldova is a member of round tables on the Global Compact National Action Plans for Sustainable Development Objectives for Migration and its implementation; on maximizing the impact on development of migrants returning abroad; on stimulating global talent - maximizing the potential of the private sector for global skills partnerships, and strengthen cooperation - civil society contribution to migrant integration.

Also, the Republic of Moldova is a speaker in the Partnership Platform, presenting the country's experience in the context of the reintegration of Moldovan migrants returning abroad and directing their contribution to the development of their communities of origin.

The Republic of Moldova's participation in GFMD offers the opportunity to participate in the international dialogue of the Global Compact for Migration, contributing to the efforts on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
