Chisinau, 17 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan-Ukrainian joint border check-point Kuchugan-Pervomaysk today was inaugurated by Prime Minister Pavel Filip and President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

At a news conference, Prime Minister Pavel Filip said that the joint checkpoint would facilitate the traffic of goods, transport means and private people. At the same time, the official referred to the so-called authorities from the left bank of Dniester, who earlier had showed discontented with the inauguration of the joint checkpoint, placed on the territory of the Transnistrian region.

“We make a quite clear difference between the so-called leaders from the Transnistrian region and our citizens who live on the left bank of Dniester. Therefore, the joint checkpoint, first of all, comes in the interest and comfort of the citizens from this region and in the interest of the economic agents. The speculations alleging that a blockade of the Transnistrian region is taking place sound bizarre; yet, they are not true. On the contrary, the exports from the Transnistrian region to Ukraine grew by ten million dollars during the last year alone and 60 per cent of the goods from this region target the European Union’s market. We find out that the today’s event is not in the liking of some leaders from this region, but is liked by the citizens who live here,” Filip noted.

For his part, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that the new joint checkpoint was aimed at liquidating corruption, as well at enhancing the citizens’ accessibility. “Starting from today, the customs officers from Ukraine and Moldova, in cooperation with the representatives of EUBAM (EU Border Assistance Mission for Moldova and Ukraine) will ensure the good work of the checkpoint. At the same time, at a today’s meeting, we discussed the extension of other joint checkpoints at the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, the means of commerce, economic cooperation, as well as the distribution of the electric energy from Ukraine to Moldova,” Poroshenko said.

The project is implemented with the support of the European Union, within the neighbourhood policy, concerns the modernization of the borders’ integrated management and has at its basis the European standards and best practices.

There have been four Moldovan-Ukrainian joint border checkpoints so far: Briceni-Rososeni, Criva-Mamaliga, Larga-Chelmenti and Giurgiulesti-Reni.
