Chisinau city hall's former official sentenced to two years in prison

Chisinau, 03 August /MOLDPRES/ – The former Chief of Transport and Communications department of the Chisinau City Hall, Igor Gamretchi, was sentenced to two years in prison for traffic of power in the paid parking lots in Moldovan capital. The decision was issued today by the magistrates of the Chisinau Buiucani sector court.
According to the judgment, the sentence is to be executed in a semi-closed penitentiary. Also, Gamretchi has the prohibition to hold certain public positions for three years. Igor Gamretchi will be provisionally released under judicial control until the sentence is finally passed. The court's decision can be appealed within 15 days.
After announcement of the decision, Gamretchi said that it would be appealed to the Court of Appeal. "I expected a less harsh measure, I will try to defend my rights further on," said Gamretchi.
At his part, the case prosecutor specified that, "the punishment will be applied after a final decision has been taken".
The former head of the Transport and Communications department of the Chisinau City Hall was arrested on 25 April 2017 in a corruption case aimed at selecting the companies that would be responsible for arranging the paid parking facilities in Moldovan capital. In the same case, the mayor of Chisinau, Dorin Chirtoaca, and the deputy mayor Nistor Grozavu had been previously detained.
