Former Moldovan deputy economics minister convicted of abuse of power

Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/- Former Deputy Economics Minister Valeriu Triboi, accused of abuse of power will pay a fine of 15,000 lei (over 700 euros) and will not have the right to hold positions for a five-year period. Magistrates to the Chisinau court delivered the verdict on 22 August.
The judges noted that the official fully admitted the blame, being tried in special procedure. He pointed out the methods of committing the crime and returned the damage worth 2.5 million lei caused to the state.
According to case prosecutors, the former official got one of the mildest punishments in the Criminal Code and lawyers would not have any reason to challenge it.
Triboi was not present at the hearing, being investigated in home arrest.
Triboi and other four persons were detained in late March in a file on abuse of power and damaging the state budget in large proportions.
According to the National Anticorruption Centre, the official abused his position and through third parties he would have bought from Moldtelecom company a real estate amounting to about 1 million lei, and later he gave the building for rent to the Nord Power Supply Company for a 10-year period. The suspect had given indications to the decision-makers of the company to repair the building from its account. Under the documents administered by the investigators, 4 million lei was allocated for the repair of the building.
