Chisinau, 24 August /MOLDPRES/ – The head of state, Igor Dodon, marked today the 73rd anniversary of the Iasi-Chisinau military operation of the World War Two. During the action, the President laid flowers at Focul Vesnic (The Eternal Fire) at the Memorial Complex Eternitate (Eternity) in Chisinau.
Igor Dodon said that events of commemoration of the Soviet soldiers took place at the Memorial Complex Capul de Pod Serpeni (Head of Bridge Serpeni). "We mark the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Moldova from the fascist occupation, on this occasion I want to congratulate all the citizens of the country. It is an extremely important historical event, which is why we need to appreciate the peace and the soldiers' acts of heroism and make it possible for such events not to be repeated. If some citizens think this is a busy day, then I can only say that every person has their opinion, yet I think most citizens today consider it a holiday," said the Head of State.
The President of Moldova said that on the occasion of the anniversary, a concert would be organized in the Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) in the centre of Chisinau on 24 August 2017, where several veterans participating in the Iasi-Chisinau operation would be decorated.
Also, the MPs of the Party of Socialists of Moldova, as well as its sympathizers, took part in the laying flowers at the Eternal Fire at the Memorial Complex Eternitate.
There passed 73 years from the victory of the Soviet troops against the fascist forces in the struggle for the territory between the Prut and the Dniester rivers, called the Iasi-Chisinau Operation. Following the action of 24 August 1944, the Soviet army regained control over the territory of Moldova. The Iasi-Chisinau Operation is qualified by some historians as the liberation of Moldova from the German-Romanian occupation, and by others – the beginning of the Soviet occupation.
Following the operation, the German troops suffered losses of at least 200,000 people, the Soviet army – 13,000 dead and about 54,000 injured, and the Romanian army – 8,000 dead and nearly 25,000 injured.
