Chisinau, 25 August /MOLDPRES/ – The Moldovan Ambassador to Moscow, Andrei Neguta, was summoned at the Russian Foreign Ministry today related to initiative of Chisinau to include in the agenda of the annual session of the UN General Assembly an item on withdrawal of Russian military forces from the territory of Moldova.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Serghei Reabkov, told the Moldovan ambassador that Moscow considered the initiative provocative, "ignoring the real causes of the presence of the Russian contingent on the Dniester."
This is seen as "another link in the chain of unfriendly actions recently undertaken by opponents of positive changes in Moldovan-Russian relations."
A Russian Foreign Ministry statement said such actions would "have a negative impact on bilateral cooperation and the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict."
The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations Organization, Victor Moraru, recently sent a letter to the UN asking for the 72th Session of the General Assembly to be included in the agenda of a point entitled "Withdrawal of Russian Military Forces from the territory of the Republic of Moldova ".
"The Government of the Republic of Moldova, in accordance with art. 11 of the Statute of the United Nations, calls for the inclusion of the issue of definitive removal of international military troops from Transnistria into the agenda for the 72nd session of the General Assembly," said the letter.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MAEIE) maintains that Moldova's initiative does not question or seek the withdrawal of Russian troops that are part of the trilateral peacekeeping force operating in the Transnistrian Security Zone (ZS). "All the information recently circulated in press, particularly from Russia, distorts both the essence of Moldova's initiative at the UN and the textual stipulations of the documents submitted to the UN Secretary-General", reads a statement of MAEIE.
