Moldovan government approves new measures for protection of Dniester basin

Chisinau, 30 August /MOLDPRES/ – The Cabinet of Ministers approved the Dniester river basin district management plan for 2017 – 2022 at its today meeting. The document comes to ensure the protection and sustainable use of water resources in the Dniester river basin, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
Thus, the objectives set out in the Plan include the prevention of deterioration of surface and groundwater status, the gradual reduction of pollution and the improvement of water bodies’ status.
In this respect, a series of measures are planned, including: Drafting of Drought and Flood Risk Management Plans, systematization of groundwater quality information, assessment of small river status, reconstruction and modernization of water treatment plants, implementation of the planting program and restoration of riparian strips. Also, the document aims at promoting the rational use of water in the household for the rural population, creating the National Park Nistrul de Jos, as well as working with the Ukrainian side to ensure the sustainable management of the Dniester river.
The implementation of these measures will help to conserve biodiversity, reduce spending on water purification for consumption and use of surface water for recreation purposes. The financial resources needed to achieve the objectives will be allocated from the state budget and from external funds.
