Chisinau, 3 October /MOLDPRES/ - The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) today approved the list of parties and other social and political organizations having right to participate in the referendum on the dismissal of Chisinau general mayor Dorin Chirtoaca from office.

Under the decision, 45 parties registered with the Justice Ministry will be able to get involved in the electoral campaign.

According to CEC head Alina Russu, the electoral campaign for these formations will start from the moment of their registration as participant. “The registration of these parties is carried out by the inferior electoral authorities,” Russu noted.

Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the CEC communication, public relations and mass media department, Rodica Sirbu, said that “the formations are to register, in order to have right to urge the citizens to back or boycott the action.”

At the same time, at the meeting, CEC created the Chisinau municipal electoral division No 1 for the organization and holding of the local referendum.

The plebiscite on the dismissal of the Moldovan capital’s mayor will take place on 19 November. The electoral period is to start 45 days ahead of this day.

Over 160,000 votes are necessary for the Chisinau mayor to be dismissed from his position. Also, for the referendum to be validated, not less than one third of those over 647,000 voters registered on lists should participate in it.

Dorin Chirtoaca has been leading Chisinau since 2007 and presently exercises his third mandate. At present, the Chisinau mayor is prosecuted in two files on influence peddling and abuse of office and is under home arrest.
