Moldovan government approves concept for reorganization of railway sector

Chisinau, 4 October /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet today approved a concept for the reorganization of the railway sector and the state enterprise Railway of Moldova (CFM) for 2018-2021. The concept was worked out at an initiative by Prime Minister Pavel Filip and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
The document is meant to ensure modernization of the railway infrastructure and its development, in order to ensure the financial sustainability and enhance the attractiveness of the Railway for national and international carriers.
The concept contains an analysis of the present situation of the railway sector. present problems in the field and instruments of their settlement, in order to create a functional and efficient railway sector, in line with the EU legislation. To this end, the concept sees starting the reorganization of the state enterprise Railway of Moldova, by the division of the enterprise into three independent stock companies for infrastructure, passengers and goods.
The divisions of CFM’s assets in three sectors, which will autonomously carry out their activity on the transports’ market, will allow a strict separation of the tasks, guaranteeing the independence of the companies and orienting them towards competitiveness and business.
At the same time, among the goals of the concept, there is the creation of the Railway Agency, Authority of Accidents’ Investigation, as well as the opening of a railway market in Moldova for private actors and attraction of new railway operators.
