Bridge across Dniester river to be functional till late November

Chisinau, 3 November /MOLDPRES/ - A bridge between the settlements Gura Bicului and Bicioc is to be opened till late November. Deputy Prime Minister Gheorghe Balan made statements to this effect following a meeting with the political representative of the Transnistrian region, Vitaly Ignatyev.    

According to Balan, the two political representatives signed a protocol decision to this end. “The Gura Bicului-Bicioc bridge has not been functional for more years. The decision was taken following more discussions. The bridge will be reopened in the interest of the residents and economic agents, as it will shorten the distance up to the Odessa city, Ukraine. We hope that this European corridor will become functional and attractive,” Balan noted.  

At the same time, the official said that the bridge had been constructed with European money ever since 2000. “Since then, the bridge has not been functional. There are certain technical deficiencies; yet, they are to be removed. Experts will soon make an assessment of the costs of works, which may be carried out even on the period when the bridge will be functional. At the same time, there are peacekeeping posts on both banks in this zone,” Gheorghe Balan said.

“Today, we carried out a very important job. This subject has been up-to-date for more time, as the bridge represents an important transport way. It was opened with the guarantee that the object will not be used on military purposes. The today’s decision will develop the transport infrastructure and will favour the free movement. We hope that this decision will improve the living of the citizens from both banks of Dniester,” Ignatyev said.  

The two political representatives specified that the decision taken would favour the holding of a new five-plus-two meeting, which may take place just till the end of November. The last talks in this format were held in Berlin in June 2016.
